4th of July Mantel

I’ve totally been down for the count with the flu. It started by my daughter getting sick in our bed at 3am. Here’s hoping it all passes soon….I don’t know about you, but I sure don’t have time to be sick!
It’s about time I post my 4th of July mantle! Hey at least it’s not after the 4th and I guess it’s not really the mantel, more like a shelf! I decided that I needed to decorate my new shelf and I also wanted to put up some patriotic decor. Being a military family we are big on red, white, and blue. On a day to day basis we don’t decorate with patriotic items, but this time of year is a good time to show our love for the USA.
I started off by adding my patriotic ribbon topiary. It may or may not stay on the shelf, I have another home for it that I’m thinking about. But for now it looks great here!
I wanted to add some warmth to the shelf so I went through my old book collection to see what I could come up with. Luckily I had a red, a white, and a blue covered books. I added a wood star on top that I painted off white and distressed.
Then I found a spot for my USA Firecracker blocks. I choose the more traditional looking ones to go with my aged books and old flags.
Next to the blocks I propped up some old flags in a glass milk bottle. I picked up the three flags while antiquing in Illinois. There are only 48 stars on the flags which means they’re at least 52 years old. I was thrilled to pick them up for $1 a piece!
It’s all above my crib bench that houses my rag wreath.
It all looks great on the distressed shelf! I love the aged books and flags, anyone up for a good ‘ole round of The Pledge of Allegiance?
