Chalkboard Trays

A couple weeks ago I told you how I made my magnetic chalkboards. Today I’m going to talk about making metal trays into chalkboards. It’s super duper easy and makes a great statement! I love it when I can mix something old with something new and functional.
You can usually find old silver trays at thrift and antique stores, weither they are real silver or not isn’t really too important but I do really love the aged silver look! They are usually only a few dollars and you can find the trays in all kinds of fun shapes, with great curves.
The first thing I do is clean up the trays and prep them for painting. You don’t have to primer the trays, but a lot of the ones I find have detail work in them that I want to try and cover as best I can. So, using a small paint brush I apply primer to the middle of the trays.
I just freehand the paint job and don’t really mess with taping things off. The curves would make taping off very time consuming and lets face it, I’m impatient!
I like using DecorArts chalkboard paint (mind you, I don’t use that roller for this project) for the trays. Again, I just freehand the chalkboard paint. I apply two coats of the paint, following the directions on the bottle.
Let the chalkboard paint cure and your done!

I used some Disc plate hangers on the back so they can be hung on the wall but they can also be proped up in a plate stand.

These could make a great statement at a wedding, designating the guest book or declaring your new title as Mr & Mrs. Or welcome your guests to your home, display the menu for the evening, or they can be given as a hostess gift! They are elegant and functional….who needs more???

Linking up to these great link parties!
