Thrifty Thursday #37

Furniture goes out….furniture goes in. This is my life : )
When I was visiting one of my favorite thrift stores this week I stumbled upon this secretary desk. I considered how packed my garage is with to-do projects, then I considered the price tag with $20 and decided it was worth it! Isn’t it fantastic? I can’t wait to give it a makeover!!!
I am of course always on the search for anything chippy and weathered. I spotted this old chippy piece of trellis and knew it was coming home with me.
Talking about chippy and weathered, as I was poking around an antique shop I noticed a couple pieces of an old picket fence by the dumpsters. Leave it to me to be surrounded by fabulous antiques and find the old worn wood by the trash! Sigh.
Check out these super awesome table legs that I scored! They are old, one of them has a chip taken out of the foot, and they are perfect! For $6 bucks they were a must buy!
Hope you enjoyed my thrifty finds for the week? Have you scored anything totally awesome or totally thrifty lately?

  1. Courtney, I can’t wait to see how you transform this splendid find. Like you, I love finding well constructed old furniture and modifying the items to fit into my eclectic decor. My greatest finds have been free, items that people leave out for garbage collection.

I’m writing to you to share a technique I’ve used to create dimension on flat surfaces and when painted provides a wonderful patina.

Just cover any surface with a thin layer of wood filler. It’s important to create a messy finish. Once dry, paint with your desired base color and then rub on a darker shade of your base. The darker paint naturally settles in the grooves and creates a wonderful aged and rustic finish.

Have a great day and look forward to finishing your new find.

  7. Hi Courtney, I’m with you on going for the picket fence ready for the trash and those graceful legs. That secretary is fabulous. I’d love to see what you’re going to do with it. I find things by the side of the road a lot and I’m stuck currently in the middle of a redo of a midcentury hutch. I found this post at Twigg Studios Sunday Show Off.

  8. The secretary desk is fantastic! Can’t wait to see what do you do with it. I keep hoping to find one myself, but garage sales aren’t that great around here.
