Faux Capiz Shell Luminaries

I don’t know about any of you but I LOVE summer!!! Now that the kids are back to school and summer is winding down, I feel a strong desire to hold onto every last bit of these long summer days. A couple weeks ago I shared my Faux Capiz Shell Luminaries over at Live Laugh Rowe and now I’d like to share them with you!!!

The supplies I used:

3 glass vases/candle holders (dollar store)

3 glass taper candle holders (dollar store)

3 candles (dollar store)

Wax paper, scissors, Mod Podge, Spray paint, and glue.

The first thing I did was cut the wax paper circles out. At first I attempted to use a circle punch to make the circles, but that was a total disaster. So I had to make peace with the fact that I was going to have to cut them all out with some good ole scissors and elbow grease.

Once all the circles were cut out it was time to Mod Podge them to the glass containers. It was pretty easy to attach the wax paper circles to the glass, with the exception of the curves. This just took a little extra time to make sure that the circle conformed to all the curves. Warning: there is a very good chance that your hands will get messy!!!

While the Mod Podge was drying, I decided to paint the glass candlestick holders with some aqua spray paint. Not only is it a very summery color but I’m kinda obsessed with it right now. I used Ocean Breeze by Krylon and gave them all a clear coat to protect them.

Once everything was dry, I used some E6000 glue to attach the painted candlesticks to the bottoms of the glass containers. After adding the glue, I added some weights to the top of the candlesticks to weight everything down.

All that was left to do was pop in some candles and give them a light.

Don’t they have a fabulous glow? They just scream summer to me.
And what’s even better??? I made these for under $10!!! I know right???

What will you miss most about Summer???

  8. Courtney, those are beautiful! I love that you spray painted the candle sticks! I just saw a tip about punching tissue paper circles. She said put the tissue in between two pieces of paper. I know yours is wax paper, but I wonder if it would work. E-6000 is awesome stuff! Your luminaries look great!

  9. What diameter are the wax paper circles?
