I have been in an industrial decor kind of mood lately apparently! I’m really loving the “industrial farmhouse” look right now so it’s inspiring a lot of what I’m working on. I just did a Makers Fair this past weekend and when my booth was all set up it reflected the mood I’ve been in. Which just so happened to make a pretty stunning booth if I do say so myself! One of the items in my booth was this fabulous Round Industrial Coffee Table. Want to see how I made it?

Thrifty Thursday Finds

It all started with this coffee table that I shared in a Thrifty Thursday post awhile ago. I ended up splitting the pedestal and the top into two separate projects because the original coffee table was attached in a jankey way. You can see what I did with the pedestal base HERE. As you can see in the original picture of the coffee table, the top was really unattractive. It looked beat up and not in a good way.

So I started the stripping and sanding process, which was quite the undertaking because it seems like there was globs of stain and clear coat on this thing. My plan was to sand all the way down to raw wood and then re-stain it. Well before that could happen I fell in love with it mid-makeover; I looked at the table top and it had a really neat naturally worn look to it. I stopped right there and decided that all it needed was a clear coat.

That took care of the top but now I needed a new base. Since I was in an industrial mood and I had just done another project with plumbing pipes, I decided to use them again. I made a Home Depot run and gathered up all the pipes, flanges, and end caps that I needed.

I really wanted the piping to be dark but they only had some of these items in the silver colored pipe. So I gathered up the pieces I needed and then planned to paint them. I first put the base together, then I used a primer especially for metal. Lastly I used some matte black spray paint and topped it off with a spray clear coat. It was super easy to attach the new pipe base to the wood top, just use some screws through the flanges.

Here is the finished piece!

I don’t know about you, but I think she is beautiful!!!

The wood is imperfect and has many flaws…..but I think that’s what gives it so much personality. I love the look of the worn away stain, I don’t think I could of planned it any better!

It made a really awesome meeting of two different styles that somehow works.

Faux Card Catalog End Table | A Diamond in the Stuff

I love to add in touches of “industrial” into my home decor; old fans, industrial carts, shipping crates, etc. I really love old card catalogs, however they are really hard to find and when you do they are usually expensive. So when I ran across a little shabby side table at the thrift store all I could think was “card table wannabe”!!! Here’s how that shabby table became this beautiful Faux Card Catalog Side Table……..

The table just had one big drawer but on the front it had these sectioned off areas that made it look like 6 little drawers. It was dingy, dinged, and missing a knob but none of that mattered. I could see something beautiful.

Quite a transformation huh? Amazing what some paint and new drawer pulls can do!!! Want to know the deets?

I painted the side table with some Country Chic Paint in Vanilla Frosting. It’s a pretty off white color and I have been using their paint for a few months now and I’m really liking it.

The new hardware came from D. Lawless Hardware. How absolutely awesome are these cabinet label pulls? They seriously MAKE the table!!!

Industrial Spool Table http://adiamondinthestuff.com/2015/03/industrial-spool-table.html http://adiamondinthestuff.com/2015/03/industrial-spool-table.html#comments Mon, 09 Mar 2015 12:00:15 +0000 http://adiamondinthestuff.com/?p=3690

Industrial Spool Table

The industrial look has become quite popular in home decor. I am personally a fan of taking items with that industrial feel and pairing them with softer textiles, colors, and decor. I was perusing the hardware store the other day and spotted an empty wooden spool sitting in the aisle. I kindly asked the sales person if these were available for taking and to my pleasant surprise he said YES!!! I quickly loaded this sucker up in my shopping cart and took it home.

So come check out how I turned this into a Industrial Spool Table….

Industrial Spool Table

There isn’t a lot of prep work to do with this one. There was some black sharpie markings that we used the sander to remove. Then all there was left to do was stain and seal the spool. I picked Minwax wood stain in Dark Walnut and Polycrylic to seal the piece.

The most difficult part was making sure that stain got into all the seams, nooks, and crannies of the spool. I even ended up using an old tooth brush to apply stain to some of the difficult spots.

I absolutely love how the dark stain transformed the spool. It now looks so much richer and upscale.

For an added bit of industrial feel I added 4 casters to the bottom of the spool. Not only are these so fun but they could be functional too. How easy it would be to vacuum if all my furniture were on wheels???

Next to these little burlap covered folding chairs all I can think is this makes the perfect looking bistro set.

So what do you think of the industrial look? Do you have any bits of the industrial look in your home?

Anyone ready for a little industrial restoration? Awhile back I picked up an old industrial cart at an auction and shared it in a Thrifty Thursday post. The cart was in pretty shabby condition when I got a hold of it. Oil stains, splintering wood, and caked on dirt was just a few of the cart’s issues. Through all of the muck all I could see was a super awesome Industrial Coffee Table.
There she is….pretty rough huh? But pretty amazing as well! When it came to cleaning this thing up I relied on the products I had on hand and some good ole elbow grease. I decided to give the cart a good sanding to try and get rid of some of the yuckier wood.
A good amount of scraping and scrubbing was done on the metal, wood, and under parts of the cart. When I say that dirt was caked on this thing, I’m not exaggerating. My old trusty power sander came in handy for this job, along with some Minwax Stain and Polycrylic.
Once the wood was sanded down a bit I decided to add some stain. I also wanted to protect the table and prevent any splinters, so I gave the whole table a few coats of Polycrylic. Making sure to cover some of the flaking paint on the metal parts. I tried to leave as much character on the table as possible, but still making it safe for home use.
I am very happy with the cart’s restoration. It’s cleaned up but still had it’s industrial integrity.
As much as I wish I could keep this Industrial Cart Coffee Table, it is for sale. Sigh.
