Yard Stick Serving Tray | A Diamond in the Stuff

I hate letting things go to waste. Hate hate hate. If I think that I can come up with a use for it, I’ll hold onto it. Sometimes for a very long time. Waiting for inspiration (or time) to strike. A couple weeks ago I did a Sewing Table Makeover and I had all these leftover yard stick remnants. Well I couldn’t very well throw them out, so I turned them into this Yard Stick Serving Tray.

Sewing Table Makeover

When I did this sewing table makeover I had several inches that were cut off of every yard stick. I also had some other yard stick remnants left over from another sewing table makeover. So what to do with a bunch of yard stick pieces?

Then I remembered some wooden trays that I had up in my stash. I’d been waiting until I thought of something awesome to do with them. So I pieced in sections of the yard sticks one by one and trimmed up some pieces where I needed to. It took lots of little cuts to get it all put in there….but it was so worth it..

I removed all of the yard stick pieces so that I could paint the tray with an off white chalk paint. It took a couple coats and then I used a clear coat to top it off. Then I placed all of the sticks back into the tray, piece by piece using E6000 glue to attach them.

I did end up doing a few coats of polycrylic over the yard sticks once they were attached to the tray. This helped smooth them out and fill in a bit of the gaps that naturally occurred.

Isn’t it pretty?

I love taking the industrial look and using it in a pretty way.

I think this would look PERFECT in a sewing room or heck any room for that matter. It just goes to prove that even the smallest “leftover” can be used in a beautiful way.
