candy cane fence board sign

If you’ve been following my blog for awhile you know all about my Fence Board Signs. I love making them for different seasons and holidays. They are so fun and the options are endless. Since I have a big holiday show coming up I wanted to make some Christmas themed fence board signs, but I wanted to try something new this year.

In the past I stuck with just a simple phrase on the board but this go around I turned it into my Candy Cane Fence Board Sign.

Candy Cane Fence Board Sign

I started out with a simple fence board from Home Depot. You can pick one up for less that $2. Most of them are pretty rough, which if that is the look you are going for is just fine. However, I plain mine down a bit to loose some of the roughness. Sanding will work too.

Since I was making the board into a candy cane the two colors I was working with was white and red. I decided to paint the whole board white, it helped “prime” the board and also take care of the white stripes.

Then it was time to prep the board for the red stripes. I grabbed my Frog Tape *love this stuff* and started taping things off. I slanted all of the tape to make it look like a true candy cane’s swirl of colors.

I spaced out the stripes and went down the whole length of the board. Be sure to press the tape down well along the way to prevent paint bleeding as much as possible. Remember if your board is rough, there still may be some bleeding but if you want a rough look it will be fine!

Finally it was time to add the red stripes. I just used some red craft paint that I had on hand and a foam brush to dab the paint on. It took a few light coats to get the color that I wanted.

Then it was time to add in the lettering. I cut out some vinyl using my Silhouette. Well actually it was contact paper (cheaper and easier for my to justify using as stencils which will just be thrown away). I weeded out the actual letters and kept the rest. Using transfer tape I put the vinyl on the board and burnished it down.

I wanted the lettering to stand out amongst the stripes so I went with black. Again just using some craft paint and a foam brush. I tried to be very careful filling in the letters with paint, trying to dab and not drag the brush.

When the black paint was dry I removed the vinyl to reveal beautiful lettering. I love the font!

All it needed was a couple hangers on the back and it was done!

Ah love it!

I can’t quite figure out if I love the candy cane stripes or the beautiful “Merry Christmas” the most. Ok, maybe just all of it is perfection!

I sure hope that my customers love it as much as I do.

Wouldn’t it be perfect on a mantel or adorning your Christmas porch? Where would you put this Candy Cane Fence Board Sign in your home?

As most of you probably know, I have a little booth at a place called Sweet Repeats. I sell a lot of my furniture and larger items that I work on, but I also make or put in a bunch of little things too. A little here and a little there.  It takes a lot to keep my booth running and full.

Cabinet Door Chalkboard

I have been trying to crank out lots of smaller projects to fill all the empty spaces in my booth. Like these old cabinet door chalkboards that I made. They are so perfect for the kitchen!

DIY Chalkboards

I also whipped up a couple more chalkboards….I was running low on chalkboards so I grabbed some frames I had lying around and got to work. I’m also trying to do major stash busting before the move!

Fence board signs

I’m starting to think towards summer and I’m starting to put some summer inspiration in my booth. Including these fence board signs, they were such a big hit last year that they are making a reappearance this year!

Book Bundle

And since I’m in a summery mood I decided to put together a little old book bundle. I tied a sweet little starfish to the muslin for a nautical twist.

So there is a little wrap of a few of the things I’ve been up to….off to my booth they go!!!

Every holiday or season I am trying to come up with fun ideas and sayings to make my fence board signs. If you’ve been following along for awhile you know that I love making these things! Which I guess is pretty obvious since I’ve made about a dozen different ones!!! So Valentine’s Day came along and I wanted a love themed sign. I came up with this All You Need is Love {Fence Board Sign}.

I’ve always loved the famous Beatles song so it seemed a no brainer to use it!! I painted the wood fence board with white craft paint. Then I used some vinyl letters as stencils and painted over the whole board with some red craft paint. I waited for the paint to dry and then removed the vinyl lettering to expose the white lettering below.
I distressed all the edges just a bit and gave the board a clear coat to finish it off. I included a heart at the end….it just seemed right. I love my little “love” sign.
I know Valentine’s Day has passed but I think this sign is a great reminder through the whole year!!! I hope you enjoyed my All You Need is Love Fence Board Sign!!!

Summer Picket Fence Signs http://adiamondinthestuff.com/2012/08/summer-picket-fence-signs.html http://adiamondinthestuff.com/2012/08/summer-picket-fence-signs.html#comments Fri, 03 Aug 2012 07:00:00 +0000 http://174.132.189.156/~adits/2012/08/summer-picket-fence-signs.html
Well it’s officially August!!! Can you believe it??? This summer had gone by so fast but I guess that just means we’ve been having lots of fun! August holds a lot of fun and excited things for me starting today…I am headed north to San Francisco with one of my best friends to do a little birthday celebration girls trip!!!
While summer is starting to wind down I am doing all that I can to hold onto it. I decided to make a couple of my fence board signs with some summer twists. The first one I made is this Wish Upon A Star fence sign.
The sign is painted white with aqua lettering and a sweet starfish on the end. I love this saying and I love it even more with this beachy twist!
Next I made this Sandy Toes & Salty Kisses Fence Sign.
I am super obsessed with the color aqua right now so of course I needed to make a sign with it. I painted the sign in aqua and the letters in white. I glued another starfish to the end of this one too. Seemed right to me.
I love love these fence signs of mine and these might be my favorites so far!!!

4th of July Fence Board Sign http://adiamondinthestuff.com/2012/06/4th-of-july-fence-board-sign.html http://adiamondinthestuff.com/2012/06/4th-of-july-fence-board-sign.html#respond Thu, 28 Jun 2012 07:00:00 +0000 http://174.132.189.156/~adits/2012/06/4th-of-july-fence-board-sign.html
On Thursday’s I normally post about my thrifty finds, but honestly there has been no time for thrifty shopping. Between our trip to Alaska and now having family visiting from Illinois it just hasn’t happened. Also, I don’t think I have room for another thing right now! I have a very large to-do list I’m trying to work on. So over the next few weeks there may be more projects instead of thrifty finds.
Another reason I’m posting a project, is because I gotta post about all my 4th of July projects before the day actually comes and goes! Today I’m sharing my 4th of July Fence Board Sign.
I used vinyl letters over a white painted fence board and painted red over the whole thing. I had my hubby plane down the wood on the front of the fence board a bit before I started. This really helped keep the red paint from bleeding behind the vinyl. All the lines came out a lot cleaner.
I think this may be one of my favorite fence board signs yet. Although it may be because I’m in full red, white, and blue mode right now!
If your interested in seeing any of my other fence board signs check them out here, there are a lot more info and how to’s in them:
