We had a big stack of pallet wood that we accumulated. It’s usually feast or famine around here with pallets. I also have a love hate relationship with pallets. Breaking them apart and actually getting good pieces of wood that don’t split and not spending the better part of a day doing it….nearly impossible! So when I get a good pile of pallet pieces going I have to tackle some projects. I had some old hardware laying around so I took some of that pallet wood and created this beautiful Pallet Barn Door Sign.

We cut the pallet wood down, laid all the pieces side by side, and used a couple other pallet pieces cross ways to attach everything in the back. All of the pallet pieces were attached to the back pieces using a nail gun. I added some dark wood stain to the wood, I love how the different types of wood picked up the stain differently.

I added the lettering onto the sign using my Silhouette to create a stencil out of vinyl. Want a tutorial on how I stencil my lettering on my pallet signs? Check THIS one out. I used some chalk paint for the sign because I love how easy it is to work with the stencils. I feel like I have less issues when I use chalk paint. I did some distressing on the letters to go with the whole feel of the sign.

Earlier I mentioned that old hardware I had lying around, well here it is. I acquired these old rusty gate hinges a long time ago and didn’t know what to do with them. I’ve had a few ideas through time but in the end making a sign with them seemed like the best way to display them. I used some E6000 glue and clamps to attach the hinges to the wood sign. I love that stuff!

I choose the saying “Start each day with a grateful heart” because it was a beautiful saying. So often we are swept up in the day-to-day. It’s a nice reminder. All in all the sign came together beautifully! Who knew some pallet wood and old hinges could make such a pretty Barn Door Sign!?

Window Memo Board Coat Rack | A Diamond in the Stuff

Several years ago (almost 5 to be exact) I gave an old window a makeover. This yellow window was one of my first projects to be posted here at ADitS and it was my first big vinyl project. A bit of a blast from the past if you will. My style and my techniques have evolved just a tad since then. After it’s first makeover it had a home in the kitchens of our last two houses. When we moved into our current home (yes that means 3 houses in the last 5 years) there was no place to hang my yellow window up so out in the garage it went. Finally I decided to give this window memo board a makeover, again!

The yellow window had been a bit beat up and the chalkboard and memo board pieces had seen better days. I was also tired of the yellow. It needed something new and fresh. The window got a new paint job using a beautiful aqua chalk paint. I replaced the two end openings with sheet metal cut to size and spray painted with chalkboard paint.

I was also over the old vinyl saying I had on the window, so I updated that too with my Silhouette. It’s almost like a completely new window, a completely new project.

The one thing that stayed the same was the old glass door knobs that I left on the window for hooks. They are just too darn pretty to replace and they look great on the new makeover!

Overall the makeover of the makeover turned out beautifully. I don’t think this Window Memo Board Coat Rack deserves to be exiled into the garage any longer!!!

Window Frame Wood Sign | A Diamond in the Stuff

When you have an old window obsession like I do it’s hard to come up with things to do with all of them. Every window is different and offers different possibilities when it comes to turning them into projects. Some offer more obstacles than possibilities though. What do you do when you have a window frame with no glass? Well I’ve done chalkboards and magnetic boards. I wanted to do something different this go around.

The window I wanted to use didn’t have any glass but it was a cute little window. I love putting vinyl sayings on windows with intact glass and that inspired this Window Frame Wood Sign.

First we cut a very thin piece of finished plywood to fit inside of the window opening. Then I stained it with some Minwax stain in Special Walnut. While that was drying I painted the window frame a pretty aqua color.

When the stain was dry I cut out a vinyl stencil with my Silhouette.

Then I used Mod Podge in the vinyl stencil to prevent bleeding from my paint color. When the Mod Podge was dry I painted some creamy white chalk paint over my stencil. It took a few coats of the chalk paint to get good coverage and then I pealed the vinyl off when the paint was dry.

I popped the plywood sign into the window frame and used some E6000 glue to attach it.

Isn’t it beautiful???

I absolutely love how the Window Frame Wood Sign turned out. I just love how the possibilities are endless with old windows. This one really transformed into a piece or art.
