It’s slowly creeping towards the 4th of July and even though I’ve been a bit MIA lately (on va-ca in Hawaii), I just had to share one last patriotic project! I have fallen in love with using old windows as frames for beautiful artwork. Whether it be a beautiful quote or image, if I’m throwing an old window around it I’m happy. So of course this time of year had me anxious to make a Window Frame Wood Flag.

There are many steps to creating this window flag art, so to make it as simple as possible I’m going to break it down with steps. Of course if you have any questions about any step, just let me know!

Got that? Ok, now that you have your flag art created. All you need is an old window frame. I grabbed this one out of my pile, cleaned it up, and used a clear sealing over the chippy paint. I used E6000 glue to attach the wood flag to the old window and let dry.

I think the old chippy window frame made the perfect start to this project. The distressed and aged wood flag is the perfect match.

Of course I love the chippy old window. That is just something that can not be duplicated. Natural weathering is often very imperfect but priceless.

It only seemed right to do this beautiful old window justice by adding beautiful old glory to it. I’m glad that I decided to add the dark wax to it, the bright new paint just didn’t go with the old window. Once I aged the flag it looked like it was meant to go together!

I’m pretty sure I will always be a sucker for a good red, white, and blue project. This one has rocketed to the top of my list. It’s just beautiful.

What do you link of my Window Frame Wood Flag?

Disclaimer: I know this flag doesn’t have the correct amount of stripes and stars as it’s just for decorative purposes. I was creating a representation of the flag and not an actual flag. {wink}

DIY Window Frame Art | A Diamond in the Stuff

A couple weeks ago I created a Window Frame Wood Art piece that I just loved! Making it opened up a lot of ideas and possibilities when it came to old window with missing or broken glass. I have made so many different things with old windows and I’m always looking for new and fresh things to do with them! I feel in love with the idea of using the old windows as “frames” and creating one of a kind DIY Window Frame Art.

For this beautiful window art I created a vinyl stencil using my Silhouette to design and cut. I stenciled the wording onto a thin piece of stained plywood and attached the wood to the window. Pretty simple. Now working with a stencil that big wasn’t so simple, but man was it worth it.

I don’t have an actual tutorial for you today but you can find my technique HERE. With this window though, I decided not to paint it and leave it with all it’s chippy goodness. I did clear coat it though to seal in the chippiness. The wording was down with two colors of chalk paint and my vinyl stencil.

I made this one for the last show I did with A Diamond in the Stuff Boutique and of course it sold. I had a hard time even putting in my booth to sell and I had a hard time watching it walk away. But I knew it was going to a new home with someone who loved it! Doesn’t get much better than that!!!

Window Frame Wood Sign | A Diamond in the Stuff

When you have an old window obsession like I do it’s hard to come up with things to do with all of them. Every window is different and offers different possibilities when it comes to turning them into projects. Some offer more obstacles than possibilities though. What do you do when you have a window frame with no glass? Well I’ve done chalkboards and magnetic boards. I wanted to do something different this go around.

The window I wanted to use didn’t have any glass but it was a cute little window. I love putting vinyl sayings on windows with intact glass and that inspired this Window Frame Wood Sign.

First we cut a very thin piece of finished plywood to fit inside of the window opening. Then I stained it with some Minwax stain in Special Walnut. While that was drying I painted the window frame a pretty aqua color.

When the stain was dry I cut out a vinyl stencil with my Silhouette.

Then I used Mod Podge in the vinyl stencil to prevent bleeding from my paint color. When the Mod Podge was dry I painted some creamy white chalk paint over my stencil. It took a few coats of the chalk paint to get good coverage and then I pealed the vinyl off when the paint was dry.

I popped the plywood sign into the window frame and used some E6000 glue to attach it.

Isn’t it beautiful???

I absolutely love how the Window Frame Wood Sign turned out. I just love how the possibilities are endless with old windows. This one really transformed into a piece or art.
