Most of us have probably seen these Pottery Barn wood plaques. I have been drooling over them for some time now. My little girl’s room is garden themed and I knew they would be so cute in her room. The price however was not so cute, as with most things Pottery Barn right? So I decided to make my own.
I started with a 8in wide board at Home Depot and cut it to the sizes of the plaques from Pottery Barn. I painted the edges and the tops of the boards (So that the wood wouldn’t show through some of the lighter fabric).
Β “What fabric?” you may be asking. Well, the Pottery Barn plaques are hand painted and I’m not so good at hand painting. So I decided to decoupage fabric to the wood for some design and color.
I layed out my fabric (cut a little larger than needed for the plaques) and covered the backs of them with Mod Podge. This makes them stiffer and prevents fraying; making the cutting to size easier.
I decoupaged the fabric to the fronts of the plaques. I cut out the words out of cardstock with the Cricut and decoupaged them on the fabric. I then covered all of it with the Mod Podge.
Here’s some close ups so you can see some of the fabric. I changed up some of the words and had to play around with the fonts and colors; obviously incorporating my Daughter’s name into the mix!
ο»ΏI had another idea for her room, an idea I’ve had for sometime. I love white picket fences and I would have one outside of my home this minute if we owned our home and we didn’t move every few years. That, however, is not my reality. So why not have a white picket fence INSIDE the house? Something we can drag with us from house to house.
First I had the hubs build me a fence. I sometimes wonder what goes through his head when I am telling him “Ok, I’m getting stuff to make a fence…that I need you to build…to put inside the house”.
I painted the fence green, using the remaining paint in two different spray cans. I knew it would mostly be covered up so it wouldn’t really matter if it was blotchy and two-toned. Next came the DecoArt Weathered Wood. This is the first time that I’ve used this stuff and it’s pretty amazing! Once the Weathered Wood dried I painted on some white paint (from a gallon of paint that wasn’t working for another project).
I love how the fence came out. The Weather Wood worked great! It really does look like a picket fence that has been sitting out in the elements for years.
Here’s the whole wall in my daughter’s room. I think it all turned out wonderfully!
So what do ya think? How does it compare to the Pottery Barn version? My daughter loves it and asked if we could put more “girly” stuff in her room. Don’t worry hunny, I’ve already got something else in the works!

It’s incredible the amount of money that people will pay for something from Pottery Barn when they can make it themselves for a fraction of the cost, huh? I guess that’s the price they pay for not tapping into their craftiness;)
