While I was gathering supplies for my crib bench I picked up a couple wooden legs at Home Depot. They didn’t have hanger bolts in them and we were unable to find any that would work. I ended up going with different legs that did have the bolts. So that left me with these wooden legs just laying around, I could return them but then I why would a crafty girl do such a thing?
I decided to turn them into pedestal candle holders. I grabbed some small circle and square plaques that I glued to the tops and bottoms of the legs. I used epoxy Gorilla Glue to attach all of the wood together. Oh and I used green beans to make sure everything got good and glued!
Once the glue was dry I used a dark walnut wood stain by Minwax to stain all the wood.
Next, I painted them “Spa Blue” by Decoart. I wasn’t too precise on my painting technique, I didn’t need nor did I want there to be a good even coverage.
After that was dry I painted them “Warm White” by Decoart, again not worrying about doing the best painting job.
Once I had all the layers on and dried it was time to do some distressing. I simply took some sandpaper to the legs, rubbing down the flat surfaces and hitting the edges harder.
You can see the blue paint and stain peaking through the white paint here and there.
They have a real beachy feel to them.
I’m so glad I held on to these legs, I am now in LOVE with them as candle holders!

Very nice tutorial. These look great. Wouldn’t they be awesome with embellishments like twine wrapped around the candle like three times and a cute metal tag or key hanging from them. Or a cool embellished tag tied from the candle stick? The ideas could be endless for these pretty holders.

That’s such a clever idea for the pretty legs. I like the distressed painting technique and the way you displayed them with the starfish.
I love it! We live right near the beach and during the Summer I like to give my house a “nautical summer rental” feel. I just may make these for myself!
