I’ve really been enjoying making magnetic chalkboards out of all the fun picture frames that I’ve been finding! I’ve had a few requests to show how I make them. It’s really pretty easy and the possibilities are endless!
Step one is buy a piece of sheet metal at your home improvement store. Be careful though, sheet metal is very sharp and those corners are dangerous!!! Don’t ask my how I learned that lesson!
Measure out your opening in the frame your going to use. Trace the measurements onto the sheet metal with a sharpie.
Next, have your hubby use tin snips to cut out the piece of metal you have marked out.
This next step isn’t totally necessary, but I prefer to primer my metal before putting the chalkboard paint on. As you can see I was working on a bunch at once!
When it comes to what kind of chalkboard paint you use, it’s really up to you. I have used DecoArt, Rustoleum, and Krylon spray chalkboard paint. They have all worked great so it really just depends on your preference! Either way follow the instructions on the paint and you’ll be golden!
These are a few of the magnetic chalkboards that I have completed. They’ll be listed in my Etsy shop soon! If you end up trying one yourself send me a comment or email me, I’d love to see what you came up with!!!

Very neat! And looks super useful! Come link up sometime at I Made It! Monday at http://www.ninthstreetnotions.com. (Also, could I use more exclamation points in three sentences?)
love how this turned out! i’m keeping this in mind for future project ideas 🙂
Great idea! We’ve done a few chalkboards the same way at our house but I haven’t cut up the tin, just made a frame to fit.

Very cute and creative! I would love to hang these in large groupings. This would be the perfect project to hang in my craft room…oh the ideas. Great job!
These are so amazing. I think I have to make one before I move into my dorm for grad school. Can I ask about how much the sheet metal cost and what home improvement store you were using (Lowes, Home Depot?). Really great DIY!
@ Epitomes and Roses: They cost about $22 for a big sheet of it and I get it at Home Depot!!!
How do you attach the metal to the frame?
