Moss Birdhouses

The weather here is gorgeous. The sun is shining, the wild flowers are blooming, and Spring seems to have already arrived. All these changes have put me in the mood for some Spring crafting. I have always been a huge fan of moss, but this year I have a sneaking suspicion that it will be making several appearances. I couldn’t contain myself anymore and decided to create some Moss Birdhouses.
I picked up a couple craft wood birdhouses at the craft store. I decided to grab two different sizes, I figured they would look nice sitting next to each other on a shelf.
Using some white craft paint, I painted the birdhouses except the roofs. I figured since you wouldn’t be able to see them there was no point in painting them. I ended up doing a couple coats of paint to completely cover the wood.
Then it was time to break out the roll of moss. Warning to those who have not used sheet moss before: it will get messy!!! The awesome thing about it is the mesh backing. It makes it easy to measure out the exact size you need and cut it to fit.
I cut out the exact size of sheet moss that I needed and used some hot glue to attach it to the roof of the birdhouse. Be careful with this step. It’s very easy to burn your fingers with hot glue through the moss. Trust me.
Your left with two super adorable moss covered birdhouses!!! Easy right??? But so beautiful and just perfect for Spring!!!
These turned out exactly how I had them pictured in my head. Now to find them a home! I just love these sweet little Moss Birdhouses!!! Don’t you???

  1. This turned out so cute!

  2. I love these. I have cats, so I am always trying to find ways to incorporate greenery into my decor and still have something they are not going to dig in.
    So Cute.

  3. I need some birdhouses also. Yours turned out so cute. Like idea of roll of moss instead of bag, it’s super messy to work with. I’ll have to keep eye out for roll and I like it to be green not that brown dead look. Great project. Thanks for sharing. Happy Weekend
Seems like I saw a bin full of unpainted ones at Jo-Ann’s on sale.

  7. My first visit here – popped over from eclectically vintage’s linky party – and have already pinned this idea. Love it! I’d already decided my spring theme would be green/white so was happy to see this craft. Thank you!

  17. You inspired me to make one myself! I love it! Very cute!
Any ideas on how to keep the moss from continuing to *fall apart* on the roof… I will be careful not to fuss with it too much, I was wondering if anyone had attempted to hair spray it, etc., to keep the moss from shedding…?

  18. I like this bird house design. Specially that rooftop design is remarkable. I’ve planned to make a similar bird nest for my garden. Since a lot of birds are now coming into my garden everyday after planting some various flowers plants. Thanks for sharing these images. These are inspiring.
