Window Frame Wood Sign

Window Frame Wood Sign | A Diamond in the Stuff

When you have an old window obsession like I do it’s hard to come up with things to do with all of them. Every window is different and offers different possibilities when it comes to turning them into projects. Some offer more obstacles than possibilities though. What do you do when you have a window frame with no glass? Well I’ve done chalkboards and magnetic boards. I wanted to do something different this go around.

The window I wanted to use didn’t have any glass but it was a cute little window. I love putting vinyl sayings on windows with intact glass and that inspired this Window Frame Wood Sign.

First we cut a very thin piece of finished plywood to fit inside of the window opening. Then I stained it with some Minwax stain in Special Walnut. While that was drying I painted the window frame a pretty aqua color.

When the stain was dry I cut out a vinyl stencil with my Silhouette.

Then I used Mod Podge in the vinyl stencil to prevent bleeding from my paint color. When the Mod Podge was dry I painted some creamy white chalk paint over my stencil. It took a few coats of the chalk paint to get good coverage and then I pealed the vinyl off when the paint was dry.

I popped the plywood sign into the window frame and used some E6000 glue to attach it.

Isn’t it beautiful???

I absolutely love how the Window Frame Wood Sign turned out. I just love how the possibilities are endless with old windows. This one really transformed into a piece or art.

  5. Thanks for this tutorial……I am wondering what type of vinyl you used for this….thanks!

  6. If I don’t have a silhouette, is there anyway to get the stencil? I have an older Cricut I use with and would love to have this quote in this font for a Christmas gift this year.

  7. Hello! I tried this same method with pine wood, stain, and 631 vinyl. But when I peeeled off the vinyl it ripped up some of the wood with it 🙁 any suggestions?

  8. Andrea Whalen says:

My husband and I married in May of 2017, but we started off in 2011 homeless, and at some points we felt hopeless. He had just left the military (Army medic) and I took the gigantic leap of faith of “running away” with him, lol. Since then we have had three miscarriages, been homeless, gained custody of his son, pushed and pulled our way through college, and finally got him the VA benefits he deserved. This sign adequately promotes the adventure we have been on and continue to endure. We are in the process of buying our first home and I want to re-create your sign to show that nothing can tear us down.
