Hopefully you had a chance to vote in the first round of Crafting with the Stars. The competition was tough! Did you see all of those amazing projects??? The project I submitted was the Personal Art Gallery.
I took this super huge frame from a broken mirror as the starting point for this project and gave it a nice new coat of flat black. I added a big ole piece of sheet metal, also paint with flat black. I just used the prongs already on the frame from the mirror to secure the metal and backing.
Next I tackled this pile of thrift store and dollar store picture frames. Most of them were missing their backings and glass. They were a motley crew, but look at that potential! They got a coat of what? What else, Heirloom White of course!
Now giving them a new coat of paint is all well in good but I needed to take these frames to the next level. I needed to bring out all of that great detail. Enter the Ralph Lauren glaze!
I just dab it on with a paint brush, making sure to get into all the little details. Then I took an old t-shirt and rubbed all of the excess glaze off. You can play with it at this point, if you take too much off you can always just add more glaze.
I added magnets, lots of magnets in some cases, with the super awesome Gorilla Glue Epoxy! That stuff is amazing stuff, this is my first time using it and I’m super impressed! Haven’t met a Gorilla Glue I didn’t like! I picked up some replacement glass at Home Depot and Michael’s for the frames and I got a little creative with the missing backings; using cardboard where needed.
Once all the magnets were dry and the frames were put together it was time for the pictures! I love pictures and surrounding our home with images of our loved ones.
I decided to do a quote in one of the frames, I choose a frame that I was having trouble finding replacement glass for. Two birds, one stone. I love the quote; Enjoy the Journey! With this military life we lead we are always headed somewhere but it’s important for us to remember to enjoy the journey, not just the destination. I used my Cricut to cut out the letters and put them on black cardstock. I wanted to have a stand out frame so I painted this frame silver and added some of the glaze.
I love all of the details in the frames and the way the glazing turned out!
Here’s a shot of some of the magnets and my makeshift frame backing. Using the sheet metal and the frames with magnets makes changing out the pictures super easy! The configuration can be changed, frames can be added or subtracted, and the orientation of the frames can be changed. It’s completely versatile! And guess what? Only two holes in the wall for all of this picture goodness!!!
One last look! I am really in love with it! We’re hanging it in our hallway so we can enjoy our very own personal art gallery!!!
I made it through the first round of Crafting with the Stars and I’m so excited!!! I can’t wait to complete my second project and see where it takes us!
