Going Green {Dishwasher Detergent Edition}

Welcome to day two of my earth friendly cleaning recipes. Yesterday I shared my recipe for Glass & Window Cleaner. Today I’m sharing a recipe for a natural Dishwasher Detergent.
Ingredients:
1 box of Borax (4lbs 12 oz)
1 box Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda (55 oz)
24 packages of unsweetened lemonade drink mix (aka: Kool aid)
3 cups Epsom Salt
Lemi Shine rinse aid
I poured the borax, washing soda, drink mix, and salt into a large pot. I gave it all a mix with a large spoon. Once it was all properly mixed, I poured it into a large plastic container that I found at Walmart. It is a 32 cup capacity container with a pour spout. Perfect.
When using the dishwashing detergent you only need to use a tablespoon at a time. So this stuff will last you a looooooong time! Make sure to use the Lemi Shine rinse agent in your rinse aid dispenser, or you can give some white vinegar a try. This will keep your dishes spot free!
This Dishwasher Detergent has worked great for us and I love knowing that I’m not putting a bunch of harsh chemicals on my families dishes.

  1. This is a great idea…I’ve been buying the mrs Meyers or method tablets because they are more environmentally friendly, but ouch the price! What would you say you paid for all the ingredients?

  5. I am going to have to try this. We make our own laundry detergent but when I tried dishwasher detergent it was awful! I think the koolaid, lemishine and epsom salt is the key. The one I tried didn’t have any of those! found you on Tater Tots and jello party! Have a great weekend.

  9. I just made this tonight. I am excited to try it out!

  10. what is the reasoning behind putting the koolaid in the mix?

  11. what is the reasoning behind putting Kool-aid in the mix?

  12. Rebecca Rulo says:

    It sounds great but why the kool-aid? Will it stain the clothes?

  13. is this safe to use with a septic tank?

  14. Looking forward to trying this. I switched to white vinegar in place of a rinse aid about a year ago and it’s been great. I also make my own laundry soap and use white vinegar instead of fabric softener… love no chemicals.
